Sizing True (ii)

This shoe fits true to size

The best guide for sizing your new Freet shoes is to start with your usual shoe size. Think about whether you always take this size or whether you sometimes need to go smaller or larger.

Customer feedback is that this style fits true to size; so order your normal size.

Our shoes are originally produced in EU sizes. All US sizes are the closest conversion so, if you know your EU size, you may want to consider using this.

Sizing & Fitting Help

Measuring Your Foot

Sometimes as a second check it is worth measuring your foot. Feet can be different sizes so its worth measuring both and taking the largest.

Standing next to a wall place a piece of paper against the wall. Place your foot on the paper with your heel just touching the wall.

Measuring Your Foot
  • The next stage is easier if you get someone else to help do it.
  • Take a pencil or pen and trace the outline of the foot on the paper.
  • Start at the heel.
  • Keep the pen at 90 degrees to the paper, so vertical, see diagram.
  • Don't draw under the foot.
Keep pencil verical
Taking a ruler measure the length of the outline in millimetres. This will be the exact size of the insole you will need. To ensure the fit is not tight add another 5.0 - 10.0 mm to the length. If you wear thick socks then add that thickness to the length.

Measuring your outline

If possible, please work from the EU sizes (the US and UK sizes are nearest conversions to these sizes so will not be as accurate). The lengths and widths are the dimensions of the insole in mm measured as per the picture below:

Feels narrow and slightly cramped

I typically fit in an EU47 size equivalent across most brands that lean towards a wide toe box, minimalist style shoe. I've gotten a size EU47 in the Freet Swale, Tanga 2, and Esk (Freet has been one of my favorite brands, though less so with this purchase). The fabric uppers have fit nicely so far, but the leather Esk was less flexible, which gave a tighter feel. A thinner sock allowed me to wear the EU47 Esk more or less comfortably.

I purchased the York 2 in an EU48 size, and even with a thinner sock, it feels somewhat cramped and uncomfortable around my toes compared to the other shoes I've tried from Freet and some of their competitors.

I don't have any issue with the general construction and look of the shoe. It looks as good in person as it does online. It seems well constructed, and it feels good except for the cramped toe box (which is why I gave it 3 out of 5 stars despite it just not working for me).

I just don't know at this point if I should return these and look elsewhere (there are no sizes larger than an EU48 offered currently), or if I should try to break them in and stretch the toe box. These aren't the most expensive shoe out there, but it's also not an insignificant amount of money to have spent if I try to break the shoe in, and it doesn't work.

I don't know if these have a more narrow feel just because of the stiffer leather upper and the happenstance of the shoe running slightly smaller, or if this is Freet intentionally narrowing their toe box design for either aesthetic or manufacturing reasons. In any case, these just aren't working for me.

Great shoes

Very happy with the zero-drop and smooth feel of the shoe. Well finished product. Great job!

Very well fitting - instantly comfortable.

Very well fitting for my wide feet plus high instep. Actually the depth over my instep is only just there but I don't think there is any problem. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that I've only worn them twice - first time for a long walk on pavements and I was blissful comfortable - is that I don't yet know how they will stand up to regular wear. But overall, so far, I am very happy. Lovely shoes.

Pretty Good Smart Casual Shoe

Great shoes for wearing in my professional setting. They breathe pretty well despite being leather and they seem to be pretty good quality. I like that the outsole is stitched for durability. I hope to use these shoes for the next few years at my job. I originally got a eu 43 but the fit was way to loose and a eu 42 with the insole taken out is just right with a pair of merino toe socks.
